With 532 new COVID-19 cases, and sadly 6 more deaths, announced in Victoria today we have again had to make some difficult choices for the safety of our staff, volunteers, pantry clients and customers.

While our aim was to reopen our Community Pantries on Monday the 3rd of August, we will now delay that opening date and remain closed for at least a further week. Our goal is always to get back on site as soon as possible but we will be closely monitoring the numbers each day and waiting for a clear down trend before we ask our team to return.

This is not the news we were hoping to share with you all, and 500+ cases is certainly not what anyone wanted to hear today. It’s a tough message to have to post but we are so grateful for how understanding you have all been during these difficult times. We will keep you informed as soon as we have any further information and all updates will be posted to Facebook, on Instagram and on our website.

Thank you.

Today’s announcement of 288 new COVID-19 cases is a devastating blow to Victoria.

As an organisation we have a duty of care to protect not only the staff and volunteers who run this charity, but also those who visit our sites to donate and to attend the Community Pantry. While our shops have all closed, there are still many people at our Sunshine and Airport West site each day, exposing each other and our team to more human contact as well as contact through donated items and boxes and bags. As a result, today we have made the decision to temporarily stop accepting donations at our sites, effective immediately.

We have also made the difficult decision to close the Community Pantries for two weeks, with the last client being seen on Friday the 17th of July. All pantry clients who are already booked in for appointments after this date will be contacted over the next few days to reschedule, and we will be fitting in extra appointments next week for these clients to ensure they have plenty of food before we close.

As you can tell from our previous posts this week, this decision is certainly not one we thought we would be making today, and not one we have made lightly. In the past five or so months since this pandemic really took hold in Australia, we have kept our pantry doors open the whole way through and worked really hard to do so. This week we have had many calls from clients telling us they are not comfortable leaving their homes even to come to the Pantry and we know that most of them will understand why we’ve had to make this choice. We will take this day by day and watch what happens with the case numbers over the next two weeks, and as always we will post any updates to this page and our website.

This has been a really hard call to make as we know how important the Pantry has been during COVID-19, but we know now we have a greater responsibility to do our part for the community and our Helping Hands family and ensure our two sites are not places where people can be exposed to, or pass on, the virus.

Visit our Op Shops

Helping Hands Mission Inc. operates seven op shops across Victoria – six in Melbourne and one in the central Victorian town of Bridgewater on Loddon, just outside of Bendigo.

Each of our op shops offers something different, whether it’s vintage fashion, quality furniture, budget-friendly clothing, or bric-a-brac and household items.

Helping Hands Airport West Fullarton Road Clearance Centre (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

492 Fullarton Road, Airport West

This may just be the biggest op shop in Australia! Our huge warehouse at Fullarton Road is packed to the rafters full of bargains. You’ll find all the usual op shop goodies like great books, bric-a-brac, homewares and records, plus a huge range of furniture (much of it brand new, or restored with love in our Community Shed); a dedicated Toy Barn, and a Community Kitchen where on weekdays you can get morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea free of charge (or for a small donation if you’re able to give).

Helping Hands Sunshine Op Shop  (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

85 Hampshire Road, Sunshine

We added Sunshine to our op shop trail in February 2017 and it has been embraced by the Brimbank community. We have a lovely little reading corner, with all books just $1, a play area and toy section for the kids, lots of furniture, beds and other household essentials, as well as our famous $2 clothing. We're conveniently located on Hampshire Road, just a couple of minutes walk from Sunshine Train Station.

Gaye's Vintage Shop (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

18 Knighton Avenue, Airport West

An absolute treasure trove for lovers of vintage fashion, you’ll find an amazing array of vintage evening gowns, day dresses, boots, heels, coats and accessories, as well as great pieces for the home – think ornate gold mirrors, framed art, and beautiful tea sets and servingware. There’s also a great range of pre-loved men’s, women’s and kids fashion, beautiful linen and loads of craft items. Named in memory of Gaye Roberts, our much-loved store manager who dedicated countless hours over many years and made this store such a special place.

Helping Hands Preston Op Shop  (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

66-68 Oakover Road, Preston

Another massive warehouse style op shop! Just like at Fullarton Road you'll find a massive range of bargain clothes, books, jewellery, bric-a-brac and furniture. Clothes start from just $2 and books and jewellery start from $1.

Helping Hands East Keilor Centreway Op Shop (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

26 Centreway, Keilor East

Our lovely little op shop in Keilor East’s bustling Centreway shopping centre has a ‘boutique’ feel, with a great range of branded clothing, jewellery, accessories and homewares. Our Centreway team put together fabulous window and store displays to show off the quality pre-loved stock we get, and they’ll happily help you put together a great outfit at a budget price. Helping Hands is activity involved with communities in central Victoria, and to continue directly support the community of Inglewood we also stock a full range of eucalyptus products from a local family business, ByGum Eucalyptus.

Helping Hands Roxburgh Park Op Shop (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

Helping Hands Bridgewater Op Shop (Temporarily closed due to Coronavirus)

15 Main Street, Bridgewater on Loddon

Our beloved ‘Bridgy’ shop opened in early 2016, occupying the old church on the hill in the main street, and has been embraced by the local community and travellers on the Calder Highway ever since. The church is once again a hub of activity and stocks all the usual op shop gems, like good books, quality cookwear and crockery, beautiful jewellery, toys for the kids and a great range of linen. Check us out if you’re a local, or plan a trip out of town and come for a visit – it’s a nice easy run up the Calder from Melbourne.

Opening Hours

Sunday & Monday: CLOSED

Tuesday – Friday: 10am - 4pm

Saturday: 10am - 2pm

How you can help

We are thankful to the local community for the quality items they donate to Helping Hands, and we very gratefully accept donations at all of our stores during business hours. Please note, if your donation is a large item we ask that you bring it to our Fullarton Road Clearance Centre, where we have the capacity to process larger donations.

Pick-ups can be arranged by dropping into any of our shops or calling 1300 892 010.

Running seven op shops is a big job and we are always looking for an extra set of helping hands. If you are interested in joining our wonderful team of volunteers, please drop into one of our shops or download our Volunteer Application Form.

We are often asked what happens to the money we raise via our op shops, and we are very proud to be able to say that all monies raised are used to support our Emergency and Material Aid Programs.

Without the funds raised from our shops, we wouldn’t be able to run these important programs that make a difference to the lives of so many people in need each week. We thank all those who donate to Helping Hands and all our wonderful customers  - by donating or shopping with us, you’re making a giving back and making a positive difference to your local community.
