Furniture collection service
Helping Hands offers free collection of furniture in good, usable condition. Every item you donate helps raise funds for our Emergency Aid programs, and gives your furniture a second life in a new home.
If you have smaller items you would like to donate, learn more about donating directly to our op shops here.
Where we can collect from
Use the map below to see the areas our small team can collect from. We typically cover suburbs within 10 km of our Airport West store, and within 5 km of our Sunshine and Preston stores.
If you’re on the border of or unsure of our collection area, please give our office a call on 1300 892 010—we’ll be happy to check for you.
What we can collect
Our collection team picks up large furniture items—basically, anything too big to fit in your car! This includes things like bedframes, mattresses, and bedroom furniture, dining tables with chairs, bookshelves, couches and anything in between like coffee tables, glass display units, student study desks, and more!
If you’re within our collection zone, we’re happy to collect these items as long as they’re in good condition and we don’t currently have an excess of them.
Goods we don’t pick-up
While we love every donation, there are some items we can’t collect. This can change daily or weekly depending on what’s currently in our warehouse or if an item isn’t suitable for resale. This includes furniture such as:
Broken or damaged furniture
Stained mattresses
Extremely large wall units
Older-style wall units and dressers
Floral couches
Bedframes with in-built radios
Spring-base bedframes
Only clothing or small household items (we’d be appreciate if these can be dropped off!)
This helps us focus on giving every donation the second life it deserves and supporting our community as effectively as possible.
Why we can’t always take everything — and how that helps families in need
We’re incredibly grateful for your generosity. Every donation helps us keep quality items out of landfill and raises vital funds through our op shops. The proceeds from these op shops go directly to our community pantries, providing food to around 150 families each day. By ensuring we stock quality goods in our op shops, these items are more likely to sell, which means more funds to support families facing hardships.
While we’d love to accept everything, we sometimes can’t. This may be because:
With limited space in our op shops and warehouses, we need to make sure every donation has the best chance of finding a new home. Thank you for understanding—and for helping us make every donation count!
It isn’t in a condition that we can pass on – we can only sell items that are safe, clean, and ready for a new owner to enjoy.
Our stock of this item is currently full – sometimes our shelves are full, and we need to pause accepting certain things until there’s room again.
It’s not something we can sell – from our 18 years of experience, we’ve learned that some items just don’t sell in our op shops, and keeping them takes up valuable space.
