Assisted Volunteers Program

Creating opportunities for everyone to contribute, belong and thrive.

At Helping Hands, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to experience the joy and purpose that comes with volunteering. That belief is at the heart of our Assisted Volunteers Program, which for the past eight years has supported individuals who may need a little extra help to get started on their volunteering journey.

This program ensures that no one is left out of the opportunity to give back, build confidence, learn new skills, and be part of a caring and connected community.

A place for everyone.

The Assisted Volunteers Program is based at our McIntosh Street op shop, where volunteers work side by side with our team to keep things running smoothly. From sorting and stocking to preparing our much-loved Helping Hands Bikkies (yes, those sweet treats that fly off the shelves!), our Assisted Volunteers contribute with enthusiasm, care, and pride.

We take the time to get to know each person—what lights them up, what they’re good at, and what they’d like to try. Then we tailor their roles to build confidence, teach new skills, and give them a real sense of achievement.

“Since starting at Helping Hands, Amy has not only made connections - she has come out of her shell. She has become more confident and walks in the doors and says hello to every person she sees.” - Jess, Carer for Amy

More than just extra hands

This program is about more than just filling roles—it’s a big part of what makes Helping Hands the inclusive, community-driven charity we are. It helps us grow in a way that truly celebrates the people who walk through our doors and the diversity that surrounds us.

Our Assisted Volunteers help us:

  • Open doors for people who might otherwise miss out

  • Create a space where everyone feels welcome

  • Reflect the vibrant community we’re part of

  • Demonstrate the power of support, kindness, and shared purpose

The result? A team that not only works together but grows together.

Know someone who’d love to get involved?

Sometimes people just need the right environment and a little encouragement to take that first step into volunteering—and we’re here to make that possible.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Helping Hands, and this program makes sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved—at their own pace and in a way that works for them. The Assisted Volunteers Program provides a safe, supportive, and welcoming pathway into community life.
